Song: Who's Gonna Love You
In RealAudio 3.0 Format
'70s soul, '80s Euro-pop and a dash
of'Liberian funk intertwine, in the velvety sounds and rhythms of
Gbanjah, the singer/songwriter whose alternative soul beats
reverberate in the hearts and minds of all people who love their
music free of definitions.
Gbanjah isn't an easily characterized artist, and he likes it
that way. Romantic and sensual, ' or bluesy and brooding, his
music is realism from the soul. "All the things people do in
songs, you know there is no way these things can happen. I just
try to be as
simple and real as can be and that's that. You'll like it or you
won't, there is no common ground," says this 26-year-old
whose travels have taken him from his Liberia, Africa birthplace
to Europe, many U.S. cities and now New York.
Gbanjah's sentimental visions envelope the sensuality of life,
his songs are pure seduction. His decision to pursue music came
only after he decided not to be a veterinarian. "I love
animals, always have since I was a kid, but as you get older you
realize that pets die and I wasn't cool with that, so I couldn't
be a vet."
His song writing and production talent has not only found its way
into his own music but that of other musicians whose work runs
the gamut from up-tempo R&B to romantic ballads. Gbanjah's
musical sound evokes the landscapes of his travels and the
variety in his musical influences. As a teenager his favorite
bands included such different styles as Culture Club, Cyndi
Lauper, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye "The percussions
that I use, people wouldn't normally use if they listened to
R&B music or pop music. You can hear the African influences,
so I try to make it blend so one doesn't stand out over the
other."
The demo is a true blending of styles and influences and
subjects. Runaway is about a young guy who has made too many
promises he can't keep to a girlfriend who wants to believe the
fairytale. But when she gets pregnant, he runs. Who's Gonna Love
You has a more personal twist. Born out of a conversation between
Gbanjah and a friend, the song examines the irony of the
question, "Who's Gonna Love You Like Me?"
Gbanjah's music will wash over you, so sit back and let the
seduction begin.
